MITIE’s involvement in the development of Kingsmead Primary School shows that sustainable construction can become a working reality.
Working alongside Cheshire County Council, Willmott Dixon, White Design and Arup, we were involved from the early design stages to advise and support the creation of a building which demonstrates the commercial viability of sustainable design in the education sector.
The school incorporates innovative features such as a biomass boiler, rainwater recycling system, solar panels and photovoltaic cells generating energy. It also showcases the variety of sustainable services that can be designed into a building to support its future and whole life cost - both environmental and financial.
An advanced Building Management System (BMS) monitors and intelligently operates energy-intensive systems such as lighting, heating and ventilation. Live display panels and a website linked to the BMS provide on-going learning opportunities for pupils and school staff, recording the use of rainwater within the school and the power generated by the biomass boiler.
